Tuesday, August 31 - Release from Segregation

At the morning briefing on Tuesday, August 31, Warden Brock reported that on Monday afternoon he had spent about two hours in segregation, interviewing the prisoners who had been taken there as part of Operation Big Scoop and explaining to them why he had taken the action he had: "If I've taken the steps to put them up in segregation, I should at least have the guts to face them and tell them myself why I have done it." He told his staff that he was particularly moved by his interview with Darryl Ghostkeeper; at the end of it Warden Brock had tears in his eyes and was satisfied that Mr. Ghostkeeper was serious about trying to address his drug problem.

Following the morning briefing the warden met with Ms. Livesly's review committee. He went through the cases individually and approved the release of nine prisoners. The first group of five prisoners was released at 10:40 a.m. Two other prisoners were released at 1:00 p.m., and the last two were released at 3:35 p.m. The different times of release reflected the arbitrariness of the whole operation. In the cases of Darryl Ghostkeeper, one of the first to be released, and Ron Tessier, one of the last, they had been sharing the same cell.
